Sunnapee Newton Winchester Wellesley stratton Lexington

This new house near Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire is a hybrid timber-frame and stick-built structure. Designed as a replacement for a sprawling vacation house lost to fire, this home sits in a meadow surrounded by woods. The clients desired a large great room and entertainment space that was lacking in the original house, and the solution was a 28-foot square timber framed kitchen/dining/living space with exposed trusses supporting the high vaulted ceiling. The rear of the house is conventionally framed and includes the entry vestibule, two bedrooms and baths at the ground floor, and a loft space overlooking the great room below. There is also a screened porch at the front for evening cocktails and sunset viewing.

The original design included gabled dormers on both sides of the great room roof as well as sloped metal roofs with glazing over the front and rear porches, but these elements were not built for budget reasons.
