The clients for this 2-family house wanted to convert it to a single-family residence for their growing family. The existing layout consisted of separate entrances for a 2-floor apartment above a single-floor apartment, and the clients desired an extensive renovation of all three floors. At the first floor, the program consisted of a large, open kitchen-family room space to the right of the central entrance hall, and a study and guest room on either side of the renovated bathroom at the left side. The existing kitchen at the rear of the house was converted to a pantry and large mudroom opening out to a new deck. The second floor was converted to three children's bedrooms and a playroom, with a new bath inserted at the rear. The third floor became the master bedroom suite, which included a separate office space and exercise room. Dormers were added to each of the main spaces in order to bring in more light and enhance the look of the house from the exterior. The stairway from the second to third floor was relocated to the existing bay at the front of the house, providing a bright and graceful transition between the children's and parent's floors.
